Here it goes
We’re so back (after like 9 years).
I’ve had a bit of time recently to think through my life and what I want my free time to look like. I enjoy writing and have let the fun side of it get away from me over the years. I’ve been thinking about launching a website for a while now and have been procrastinating doing it for a million reasons that I had to talk myself through, so today I’m finally taking the leap. Honestly, it's been a tumultuous period, not to get into it too much in my first post but I've gotten to explore myself and have been given a lot more time than I've ever had in my life.
What exactly this is remains largely to be seen, but the general idea is a mix of personal posts about life in your mid-twenties, as well as highlighting interesting things - be this businesses, restaurants, hotels, experiences, community projects, and artists from around the East Coast. This region is my home, I’ve learned to love it for everything it’s worth, and have carved out space for myself in it. I’ve stayed when I didn’t have to, and every breath of ocean air reminds me of why. But living here as a single gay in your 20s comes with challenges, ones I’ve taken a lot of pride in navigating with some degree of success.
There are so many unique things going on here in Nova Scotia at the moment. I see it with every new development, business opening, event, and unique person who chooses to move here. A special shoutout goes to those who have been doing it here for years, even before Nova Scotia was the place to be. Behind all of this is real, motivated people driving their communities forward and keeping things moving.
The bottom line is: this space is about the cool people, the cool places, and the cool things that the East Coast has to offer, and making the most of young adulthood in it. I know you're “supposed” to have a niche to start a blog and that will definitely get honed with time, but for now, all I know is I have this domain for a year and a passion for sharing the things I find interesting with the world.
I think there are a million places I can take this site and things I could do with it. I would love to make interviews a focal point and showcase the stories behind the places. I would also love to do weekly roundups of local affairs, and can even see this being turned into a magazine format down the road. I’m open to suggestions for things to write about or hearing from you if you’d like to be involved so drop me a message personally or use the contact box.
Nova Scotia has so many amazing up-and-coming creators and I was concerned about saturating the market or simply reproducing social media content that’s already out there. Truthfully, however, I feel strongly that there’s a gap in what’s being covered, and the opportunity is there to do something different. I feel like written work is not as common, and is something I can do in conjunction with the common reel/TikTok content that exists. I also know that sponsored content is on the rise. That definitely has a place and isn't something I would never do but a lot gets missed when the focus is solely on sales. There’s so much more behind a business - what its mission is, why someone founded it, what they had to do to get there, and what it provides to the community. All these things aren’t reflected in what’s out there content-wise and I think there are a lot of folks out there who may not be able to get their important work shared through the typical method. All this to say I wouldn’t want to replace or replicate the other amazing creators from around the region, nor do I feel that’s what this is.
The content and makeup of the blog will come with time and hopefully consistency, but worse case scenario is I have a place to express myself. For now, please join me on this adventure. You can subscribe by email below.
